US President Joe Biden on Monday criticized China’s “increasingly aggressive and coercive actions” towards Taiwan and raised human rights concerns about Beijing’s behavior in Xinjiang, Tibet and Hong Kong.
The criticism came during Biden’s first face-to-face meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the White House said.
The conversation between the two heads of state, which lasted for about three hours, was aimed at resolving differences between superpowers that compete for global influence amid growing economic and security tensions.
Xi and Biden shook hands at a luxury “resort” located in Indonesia, where they are attending the G20 summit (19 largest economies in the world, except for the European Union).
“As leaders of both countries, I believe we have a responsibility to show that China and the United States can manage their differences, keep competition from approaching conflict, and find ways to work together on pressing global issues that require our mutual cooperation. ” Biden said at the opening of the meeting.
For his part, Xi urged Biden to “choose the right path” and “improve relations” between China and the US.
