This Saturday, two firefighters were injured while putting out a fire after a fire broke out at the Sociedade Portuense de Drogas factory in Rua da Cavada, S. Cosme, in Gondomar.
Gondomar fire chief Fernando Tavares said one of the victims was “a firefighter who had a seizure.” Both operators were taken to the hospital.
The fire alarm at the glue and paint factory was received at 17:41. More than 200 operators from various fire stations were mobilized to the scene, supported by dozens of vehicles.
Fifteen houses had to be evacuated due to the danger of an explosion, as they were within the five-kilometer perimeter of the fire. However, residents have since been allowed to return home safely. The commander of the Gondomar firefighters advised people to open the doors and windows of the premises so that air could circulate.
“[Esta] it will be a long night for the firefighters because there is a risk of a new fire,” said Fernando Tavares.
For several hours, the operators focused their efforts on containing the flames in the plant’s storage areas so that they would not reach the fuel bunkers that are on site.
