The number of awards that make up the Oscars will increase from 23 to 24. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced a new category for 2026 – Best Actor, according to a report BBC News. The last time a category was added was in 2002: Best Animated Feature Film.
The new award recognizes the work of casting directors. “Casting directors play an important role in the making of films,” said Academy CEO Bill Kramer.
“We congratulate the members of our casting directors team for this important milestone and for their commitment and diligence throughout this process,” he added.
Casting directors have been asking for the past few years to have their work recognized in the same way as others.
In accordance with BBC NewsPrize requirements are due to be announced in April 2025. The category will only be introduced in 2026 due to the time required to plan prize campaigns.
