This Monday, the PPC requested an urgent hearing from the Minister of the Interior, Margarida Blasco, to seek clarification on the measures taken to prevent hate crimes following the attacks on immigrants in Porto.
In a request to which the Luza agency had access, PCP deputy António Filipe argues that these attacks are “intolerable events that must be condemned and the perpetrators identified and punished, guaranteeing the victims all the necessary support.”
“These events are not related to hate speech, racism and xenophobia, which are propagated in Portuguese society and the spread of which is morally responsible for the occurrence of hate crimes,” the document says.
The PCP warns that the circumstances in which the crimes occurred in Porto “are of a group nature, warning of the existence of organized groups willing to commit crimes of this type, whose identification and prosecution appears necessary to ensure the safety and peace of mind of citizens.” and foreigners residing in Portugal.”
“In this sense, the parliamentary group of the PKP demands an urgent hearing with the Minister of the Interior in order to inform the Assembly of the Republic about the measures taken by the security forces to prevent the occurrence of hate crimes in Portugal. society, as well as to identify and bring to justice its authors,” it says.
In addition to this initiative, the PKP also submitted another request to hear from the Presidential Minister in charge of the field of migration, António Leitán Amara, in order to “obtain clarification regarding the measures that the government is taking to solve problems that affect the functioning of the Agency for Integration, Migration and Asylum (AIMA).
In this request, MP António Filipe claims that “a lack of answers is accumulating” for students and workers who arrived in Portugal on a visa but have not yet managed to make an appointment, as well as for “many foreign citizens with documents that cannot be renewed” . or “undocumented citizens because they cannot make an appointment for legalization.”
“In many cases, we are faced with citizens who work and whose rights cannot be realized due to the lack of mandatory procedures for concluding employment contracts; others extend their employment contracts; some have problems with access to housing and provision of healthcare,” the deputy emphasizes.
According to the PCP, “the accumulation of thousands of immigrants in this situation requires the effective implementation of emergency measures” and that “the full picture of the processes taking place in AIMA in relation to the situations described” is known.
Early on Friday morning, several immigrants were attacked in three different locations in the city of Porto, with at least two of the attackers receiving treatment at Sao Joao hospital.
In one case, the attack took place on the home of 10 immigrants on Rua do Bonfim, where a group of 10 men invaded.
Following the various attacks, six men were identified and one was arrested for possession of an illegal weapon, taken to court and remanded in custody pending trial.
