Madeira Civil Protection Ready to Join Relief Mission in Turkey

The Regional Civil Protection Service (SRPC) of Madeira expressed its readiness to join the relief mission in Turkey and Syria following the earthquakes that hit those countries on Monday, as announced on Tuesday.

In a statement, the SRPC indicates that on Monday it told the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority (ANEPC) “immediate availability and interest in including multidisciplinary teams integrated into international missions under European Civil Protection.” A mechanism that will eventually be deployed in the territories affected by the earthquakes that affected Turkey and Syria.

The Madeira Civil Protection notes that “the initiative has been very well received by the president of the ANEPC and will be activated if necessary.”

The SRPC also indicates that Madeira “has skills that can integrate the civil protection modules available to the National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority, and to this end, the SRPC will promote the application process for education and specialized training, focusing on areas of specialization.” pre-hospital emergency medical care, wide-angle rescue, and rural and industrial fire fighting.”

“The intention of this regional service is to create synergies with the ANEPC as the national point of contact with the European Mechanism’s Emergency Response and Coordination Center to highlight the technical and training skills of the operational personnel assigned to the RAM’s ten fire brigades,” he adds.

The tentative balance of Monday’s earthquakes in Turkey and Syria has increased to more than 5,000 dead, with rescue efforts underway on the ruins of collapsed buildings in both countries.

Earthquakes measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale destroyed thousands of buildings in southern Turkey and northern Syria.

Rescuers remain in the affected areas, the work is difficult due to low temperatures in the region.

The number of people affected by the earthquakes that hit southeastern Turkey and northern Syria could reach 23 million, according to an estimate released on Tuesday by the World Health Organization (WHO).
